About Us

Sailing North offers skippered voyages from Lough Foyle in the North West of Ireland.

Our voyages can take you north to the wild beauty of the Scottish Islands, and west around Malin Head, Ireland’s most northerly point. Or you can sail east past the Giant’s Causeway, formed by intense volcanic activity about 50 million years ago, through the strong tides of Rathlin Sound in the North Channel.

We cater for experienced sailors and beginners alike and offer family-friendly trips and breaks.

Learn How To Sail

Want to start sailing or extend your skills? We also offer sail training from our base at the Foyle Port Marina in Derry, including RYA Theory and Practice, and specialist courses in areas like navigation, rope skills and marine radio.

Team Building

We offer corporate packages and sessions for businesses and organisations. Sailing together is the perfect way to teach a deep understanding of the importance of working as a team.  It’s also ideal for building team spirit and camaraderie.

Our Yacht

Comfortable, With a Touch of Pure Luxury

Our boat ‘Coriolis’ is a Sweden Yachts 42…..“probably the best-sailing 42-footer ever built.” Set out on your first cruise in a Sweden Yachts 42 and you’ll know what we mean – immediately. It is a fast sailyacht and it performs beyond expectations.

It reacts to sail changes like a thoroughbred. Acceleration under full sail is attention-grabbing. And because the Sweden Yachts 42 has been designed for true sailing performance, it’s a dream to steer. It behaves just as well on short active racing tacks as on laid-back cruises downwind.

Although this yacht is primarily built for active sailing, it is also a great example of good living afloat. Below deck, is a magnificently crafted interior in fine wood. There’s a handsome saloon for entertaining, three double cabins, and two head compartments with shower. There is plenty of locker and stowage space and an enviable galley (kitchen) for cooking. Everything has been designed for comfort and convenience, and a high standard of on-board living.

Lough Foyle – Gateway to the North Atlantic

Lough Foyle is an ideal location for exploring the North Coast and Scottish Hebrides. We operate from Foyle Port Marina which is on the quays right in the heart of Derry city, close to restaurants, bars and shops.

From our base on Lough Foyle, we can offer everything from short trips up Lough Foyle, out of the Foyle heading east or west, and voyages to the Scottish Islands.

Maritime History

Lough Foyle has a rich maritime heritage, dating from the earliest fishermen and travellers like Colmcille, who left here for the Scottish island of Iona in the year 563. Over the centuries, it’s voyagers included the Vikings and Normans, right through to its trading heyday from the 17th Century, its role in transporting emigrants to America and Canada, and of course, its importance as a WW2 base from the 1940s.

In more recent years, sailing has seen a revival with the development of the Foyle Marina and the Greencastle Marina, coupled with Derry’s inclusion as a Clipper Race stopover. Today, the Foyle attracts a growing number of sailors from all over the world, particularly those who love the city centre location of Foyle Marina.
